An explosion at an ammunition factory in Spain injured six people on 31 January. The plant in the country's southeastern Murcia region is operated by Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, a subsidiary of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall.

Firefighters were called to the site in Javali Viejo, located on the outskirts of the city of Murcia, following reports of an explosion. A fire was extinguished and six men, aged between 30 and 52, were taken to a local hospital for treatment. One of the injured is reported to be in a serious condition.

A small forest fire was also caused by the explosion, however firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

The Rheinmetall plant manufacturers artillery ammunition, mortars, and rocket propulsion systems, its website says. The company said there was no evidence of the explosion being a "deliberate attack" and that an investigation was underway. Ukraine is one of Rheinmetall's largest customers.

The company added that 427 people were employed at the Javali Viejo and that its production facilities had not been damaged.
